Our Facility:

Founded in 1969, Wee Lad and Lassie Early Learning Center is a small private facility located on a beautiful wooded acre in Arnold, Maryland. Our programs include twos, threes, morning and full day pre-k classes. Wee Lad and Lassie offers morning preschool classes from 9 a.m. to noon and full day extended care from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for working families. Varied attendance schedules are available with choices ranging from two half-days to five full days.

Wee Lad and Lassie is Maryland Department of Education (MSDE) accredited and has a 5 Check Maryland EXCELs rating. Currently, we are one of only two MSDE accredited programs in Arnold. Check out the sidebar to learn more about our commitment to excellence and the value of selecting an accredited and rated program for your child.

We specialize in the care of children with asthma and food allergies. Wee Lad and Lassie is a peanut and tree nut free facility and has earned the Asthma Friendly Childcare Certification from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Our sister school, A Child's Garden, is located in the heart of beautiful Severna Park, caters to the youngest learners, ages 18 months to 3 years old.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide a stimulating, developmentally appropriate environmentthat enhances the child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn in an atmosphere of loving care with individual attention to children’s needs and learning styles, respecting parents as partners in the learning community.

Our Philosophy:

We believe our school is a special place, unique in a child’s experience, and designed to provide the components of a quality early childhood educational program. Recognizing how crucial and important the early years of childhood are, we believe in inspiring children to reach their highest potential academically, socially, physically and artistically.

The components of our program are:

  • A stimulating environment, rich with opportunities for learning in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and the Arts, which enhances the child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn in an atmosphere of loving care.

  • Low adult-child ratios, which are associated with more extensive teacher-child interaction and the ability to individualize learning.  Small group size provides more opportunities for teachers to encourage exploration, problem-solving and promote language development.

  • The development of cognitive, social-emotional, and motor skills, which are related to early learning and later academic achievement.

  • Teachers who are degreed, teach using the principles of developmentally appropriate practice, and are committed to continued growth as professionals to improve the learning of all students.

  • Mutually beneficial relationships with families to develop the deep knowledge of individual children, so we can teach each child in the context in which he/she develops and learns.

Our Commitment to Excellence

Program accreditation standards represent the highest quality and reflect research-based best practices in early childhood education.

In 2015, Wee Lad & Lassie became one of the only Early Childhood Programs in Anne Arundel County to be awarded the highest rating (check level 5) under the Maryland EXCELS program based upon nationally recognized quality standards and best practices.

In 2005, we joined the very few independent preschool programs to be accredited by the Maryland Department of Education Early Childhood Accreditation Project.  This means our management, staff and curricula meet the highest standards in Maryland.
